About
As a Master Somatic Movement Educator and Therapist with over 20 years of experience, there are key ingredients in my somatic sessions which are nourishing both in the offering and in the receiving.
Check-in
Each week, each day, each moment we are in a process of change. In caring deeply for you, I will always inquire as to your well-being on a physical, emotional, mental, and psychophysical level. From here I customize our movement explorations in terms of safety, comfort, pacing, and content.
Theme
A brief introduction/appetizer of creative props and pictures (artistic or anatomical) prepares and supports you in your session.
Experiential
This comprises the main course of our exploration together. I will guide you in movement with the use of one and often more of the following: imagery, somatization, sounding, props, witnessing, safe embodied touch, and providing options to help you both deepen your awareness and to empower you in further inquiries. [In groups I frequently offer single, duo, and group explorations.]
Integration
This is a time for you to digest and absorb your embodied movement. Through drawing, colouring, discussion, and/or questions you can integrate your experience at another level.
Home Practice
To further nourish you in competent movement, I offer a ‘container’ of one or two easeful, efficient, and enjoyable practices for you to continue to integrate at home.
Testimonials
In 2016, my wife and I began a twice a week movement session with Janet Kwantes. At that time I was suffering tendonitis in both shoulders, back issues, and tightness in both hips. In short order we found out that Janet is far more than a pilates instructor. Janet’s background in body movement is exceptional. In a small group setting of 3 people she tailored our twice weekly sessions to address each individual’s needs. The programs she took us through completely solved my shoulder issues. Janet set up a pre-golf warm-up/stretching regime which has helped me greatly. Her teaching style ensures complete understanding. Her personality ensures that although we work hard, we are enjoying ourselves and having a few laughs along the way. Janet has been a godsend to me and I highly recommend her services.

Following over 3 years of treatments and rehabilitation for polymyalgia rheumatica and then being put on an urgent list for hip replacement for both hips, I was fortunate to be introduced to Janet Kwantes and her extensive and unique training in rehabilitation. She has slowly and patiently walked me through an exercise program that has first helped me where my weaknesses are and how to work on strengthening them. It continues to astonish me when she does hands-on work on areas that I don’t even realize need to be released. I am so grateful that she has been able to help me in regaining my strength and reducing pain after my long journey in medical treatment.

I have worked with a lot of different practitioners since sustaining a low back injury 10 years ago, and Janet is the best! In private class sessions, Janet is helping me grow and develop my mind-body awareness and connection in a very supportive approach, using her various skills, including touch therapy, alongside her extensive knowledge of anatomy and somatic movement. With each session, Janet has worked with me to identify subtle imbalances that can contribute to pain, and improve joint stability and imbalances.
Janet’s approach to movement has taught me how to move with ease and strength; I feel much better equipped to handle the activities that I love well into old age!

Every now and then life gifts you with a teacher that shares their light and wisdom in ways that you can immediately integrate into every aspect of your life.
Janet is a true gem and I am grateful to have 5 years of her teachings (both group and individual sessions) to inform my own personal practice as well as my professional practice as a psychologist.
Because she is a lifelong learner, Janet effortlessly offers instructional cues that help develop somatic insight and awareness along with scientific knowledge related to human development, anatomy, physiology, etc.
As a psychologist, part of my education and training was health focused and I am easily able to articulate human development and how trauma and stress manifest in the body. Working with Janet, I have been able to deepen understanding of these concepts through experiential activities—which has transformed my own insight along with my work with clients and students.
Her writing, her teachings, her presence—all reflect the wisdom and light she generously offers. I look forward to continuing to learn with and from Janet!

I have been ever so fortunate to have been a student of Janet’s for numerous years. In that time her knowledge, passion and dedication to her students has left me feeling special, blessed and cared for. Janet not only tailors her lessons through a new central theme each sessions, she includes exercises and props that tie into that theme AND the needs of her students. When I exercise on my own at home, I hear Janet’s voice and explanations of movement so that I understand the intricacies of movement that I took for granted. Who knew or gave thought to … ‘you need to go down…to go up’….
